Aller le trot. Ce cheval trotte mal. Un cheval qui trotte menu. Faites trotter ce cheval.   Il se dit, familièrement et par extension, D'une personne qui marche beaucoup à pied. Nous avons bien à trotter pour nous rendre à tel endroit. Il a trotté tout le jour.   Il signifie aussi, figurément et familièrement, Faire bien des courses, bien des démarches pour quelque affaire. Il y a long-temps que je trotte pour cette affaire-là. Il est allé trotter pour des emplettes.

Prov., On entendrait une souris trotter, se dit Pour exprimer qu'on n'entend pas le plus léger bruit.

Fig. et fam., Cette idée lui trotte dans la tête, par la tête, Cette idée l'occupe, il y pense souvent.
